Dreams are important. Not the scary, exciting or ahm x-rated dreams that you encounter as you drift off to sleep but the dreams and aspirations you have about your future. Well, night-time dreams are also important but that is another topic altogether.
I particularly love the quote:
The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.
Michelangelo
This resonates within me as I live in a part of London that is quite frankly, not so economically developed and I have realised that many students are despondent about their future. Me included, at times. They do not want to spend their time studying and working towards their exams, yet seem worried about them when results day approaches.
Why? No, every teenager is not like this as many study extremely well even if they come from a unprivileged background but what appears to set them apart is the fact they have a clear goal in mind. They have a certain aspiration, a dream, a desire to be somebody and do something with their lives.
Aspiring is a way in which you become motivated to work harder. It is why a builder lays the first foundations of a skyscraper, it is why an exhausted adult with a family to support will do unpaid work experience at an architect firm, it is why a student will revise on a Friday night or in the early hours of the morning. Having a goal leads to motivation which leads to action which makes a person try his utmost to achieve it.
This brings me to my experience of setting a goal for myself, which I will tell you about in an upcoming post. What are your hopes and dreams? What have been your experiences of hopes and dreams?
Reblogged this on A WORRIED STUDENT and commented:
A reblog of a post I wrote when I first began this blog a few months ago. Perhaps this post is more important now, with summer approaching and new things to look forward to as people move on with their lives.

Great post, now most of my hopes and dreams are in my children, the hope that I am instilling a strong set of good morals in them and that they will grow up to be good men, who aappreciate all of the small stuff in life. I also dream that one day my family and I will be able to travel to Ireland, and visit the places out ancestors lived.

Thank you. Those are amazing hopes and dreams to aspire to. When you do visit Ireland, maybe hop over to England! 🙂

Wow, you are preaching to the converted (me)! It is not only the young who need a dream, a goal. The elderly and, well, the old also need to have something to look forward to. I live in a retirement village and it makes me so sad to see these old folk just sitting and staring into space. Existing… but not LIVING… Anyway, this place is undergoing management changes. Perhaps someone will take note and introduce changes and activities to these poor people. We all need a reason to live.

That’s a very important point, we all need something to keep us motivated no matter what our age.

Our aspirations and dreams determine our path forward. They motivate us and give us the strength to persevere when we encounter obstacles along our journey through life.
