Start Of Uni-Is It All It’s Cracked Up To Be?


I don’t party. That statement itself should tell you that for me fresher’s week consists merely of attending enrollment and induction at university. Not to say that I am a boring old student but the fact is nearly every event in Fresher’s week involves one thing; alcohol.

As you probably have guessed by now, I don’t go near that stuff which means all those parties, clubs and such things are a no no. You may ask then, why the hell would university be exciting then and quite frankly I have asked myself the same question. The answer is that I currently have no answer. The jury is still out on this one since I have only had a three lectures so I can’t really enthuse about the joys of studying literature at degree level just yet.

So how else can university be enjoyed? Well quite honestly, my intention to go to university hasn’t been to enjoy myself and have a wild old time anyway so it is not a primary concern but I guess if I have to spend three years there then I may aswell have some sort of fun. How though? The main thing about university is the vast amount of clubs on offer and normally they don’t really interest me but this time, I am really hoping to join the student newspaper. I am hoping it will be a great experience and also make my journey to university more worthwile as currently I have to travel an hour just for an hour lecture! Of course, no one would be demotivated at the beginning of the year but I suspect that may just change as the weeks go by.

Saying that, the timetable is extremely liberating, so much so that I don’t know what to do with myself at times. Oh yes, the set reading which I am behind on!

So Until I Have Read 600+ Pages..

  2. As a (now) second year student who rarely drinks and hates clubbing I have a suggestion for you!

    Invest in some board games and a few card games, I suggest Munchkin and Cards Against Humanity (or Monopoly if you like being angry and hating everyone you know..). Get some sugary drinks and some crisps and have a games night 😀

    I have games nights with my friends once or more a week and it’s fantastic; everyone has fun, everyone remembers what happened and nobody injures themselves (although if you get Monopoly people may injure other people….) It might sound cheesy or lame, but honestly, it’s amazing!

  3. Board games, crafts, cooking for one another, and watching Disney films are the sort of wild adventures my friends and I enjoy. Drinking and “partying” just isin’t for me so I understand where your coming from! Best of luck at uni!

  4. Well I think no alcohol or parties is nicer in a way (I’m not your age as you’ll know, but my view is the same as even when I’m of the age, I won’t be able to drink either) so yeah, go you! And the newspaper does sound really fun; you like writing and you’re good at it, so good luck if/when (don’t know the system but you know what I mean) you join! 😀

  5. I agree with you on the alcohol thing. Enjoying myself does not man to get drunk and hungover the next morning. Also, I have enjoyed myself on the year I have been on college (and I haven’t partied. At all :D) So it is possible, if you enjoy what you’re doing!

  6. I think it’s a great idea for you to join your school’s newspaper team. Your writing is always interesting, and with student papers you don’t even have to write about current events in the school, but instead do an advice or poetry column or the like. And since you have so much free time, aside from that reading you need to catch up on, I think this would be a great way for you to practice your writing for a different target audience.   8. That’s so different, than again, I went to a conservative Christian college, the whole campus is dry. And people who want to drink have the tact to not do so on campus. So in my time at school we had a ton of fun without a drop of alchol. My favorite is when we decided to go to the local CVS at 3 am just because we could. We took so many dumb photos and then made an early breakfast. Good memories. You can have a great time, just make good friends 🙂

  11. Excellent choice to not succumb to the party and alcohol culture. Your body and health will say thank you. That’ll, be much easier to continue because you don’t live on campus, for sure. As you become friends with others in your classes, you’ll find more activities at the uni. You’ve just begun this wonderful chapter in your life. Live it to the fullest (with a sober and in control mind)!

  12. Couldn’t agree more with you on this post! I don’t drink and I’ve had a lot of people ask me, “How is that even humanly possible?” There’s more to Uni than alcohol. Lucky for me, my group of friends enjoy eating – so we cook together and eat and yak away! (; Good luck anyways! (:
